More Trees to Fight Against Climate Change

October 20, 2018 was marked again by the “Stop Talking, Start Planting” campaign.

37 students from 15 schools were educated as climate ambassadors as part of a Plant for the Planet Academy supported by SAF-HOLLAND.

The main moderator Emilia Mekok and the two co-moderators Luis Baumbach and Sascha Barz explained the most important points concerning climate protection and climate justice as well as the importance of trees in this context. Among other things the objective of keeping the temperature rise under a border of 2° should be reached by planting 1,000 billion trees.

The highlight of the day came after the lunch break – the active planting of trees.

In bright sunshine and with the friendly support of the community of Bessenbach, the 37 academy participants were able to plant around 50 silver fir trees and sow the identical quantity of acorns. But we could learn from the explanations of the forester, that this is not quite simple in this year.
The long-lasting drought has of course an effect on the forests and ensures that young trees are less developed than they should be at this time.
Accordingly, the young trees had not only to be planted but also watered immediately so that they could grow up well and be able to absorb approx. 10 kg CO2 as well as to produce up to 130 kg oxygen per year.

SAF-HOLLAND Donates for Climate Protection

It all started in 2007 with a school presentation by the at that time 9-year-old Felix Finkbeiner. Today Plant-for-the-Planet is a global movement with one major goal:

Planting trees all over the world to fight against the climate crisis.

However, a lot has happened since the Plant-for-the-Planet Foundation was founded.

For example the so called plant for the planet academies, events by children for children at which they enable each other to take action against the problems of the climate crisis, were organized worldwide.

Or the communication campaign entitled “Stop talking. Start planting” was launched in 2009 to make the initiative even better known with prominent support such as Harrison Ford or Prince Albert of Monaco.

In addition, the children convince environmental politicians of how important a global treaty based on climate justice is for their future.

And, of course, trees have been planted again and again over the years by the 100,000 children who are now active worldwide.

Currently about 3000 billion trees are growing worldwide. But according to Dr. Tom Crowther of Yale University, there is room for another 1000 billion trees without beeing in competition with agriculture or settlements. And these trees can absorb a quarter of the annual man-made CO2 emissions.

This is the reason why Plant-for-the-Planet wants to inspire the world to plant these 1000 billion trees – a future-oriented and sustainable goal that SAF-HOLLAND would like to support with its new donation.

30 Children will be Trained as Climate Amassadors

On May 5, 2018, around 30 children took the opportunity to learn about the climate crisis in the Klingerhof in Hösbach from already trained students of the plant-for-the-planet foundation and to become climate ambassadors, in order to self-manage a little bit and get involved in and their future.

The trained climate ambassadors Torben Michalk and Linus Saschek showed the most important points on the subject of climate protection – and climate justice in a comprehensible and sovereign way. In particular, they has been focused on the distribution and problem of human-induced CO2 emissions.

With the transmitted knowledge that trees are very important for climate protection, the students set out after the lunch break to put the theory into practice.

Armed with spades and hoes and full of enthusiasm, the students helped to reach the foundation’s goal of planting a trillion trees worldwide, by planting around 100 firs together with the local forester. At this point we want to thank the municipality of Bessenbach, which has kindly enabled this planting action again.

The member of the Bavarian state parilament Dr. Hans Jürgen Fahn explained in a short speech, that the message of the Plant-for-the-Planet Foundation has also arrived in politics and that they recognized that the students of today have to take the future of tomorrow into their hands.

We at SAF-Holland are also convinced that it is high time to stand up for climate protection and therefore we support the Plant-for-the-Planet Foundation among other things with the help of such days of action – for the future of all of us, but especially for those of our children.

European Transport Award for Sustainability

For the fourth time, the Hussverlag has focused on the economic, ecological and social aspects of product and service offerings within the commercial vehicle industry with the European Transport Award for Sustainability.

As a responsible company, SAF-HOLLAND promotes actions for people, the environment and energy efficiency, and aims to make the best possible contribution to climate and environmental protection by means of a CO2-friendly working method.

The globally active company sets an example as a social and future-oriented employer with concrete resource-saving working methods, special energy-saving measures, the health promotion of the employees or the support of the initiative “Plant for the Planet” with donations and action days to sensitize children to the climate and justice problems,

The main concern is the permanent further development of the product range as reliable solutions for all vehicle and trailer manufacturers. The focus here is explicitly on weight-reducing products for the commercial vehicle industry for more payload, lower fuel consumption, and thus reduced CO2 emissions. E.g. the new adaptive air damping system on trailer axles saves 18 kg weight per trailer and works without oil pressure shock absorbers.

170 Trees for Climate Protection

Despite wind and rain, the 58 participating students planted around 170 fir trees, beeches and Douglas firs on 25.11.2017 at the 2nd Plant for the Planet Academy supported this year by SAF-HOLLAND with the kind support of the Bessenbach community.

The goal of “Plant-for-the-Planet” is to sensitize as many students as possible to the climate and justice issues. And SAF-HOLLAND supports the foundation, among other things, by organizing academies, as they took place on 25.11.2017 at the Landhotel Klingerhof in Hösbach-Winzenhohl, to achieve these goals.

At an academy, the students experience from already trained ambassadors – also children – the climatic and ecological contexts. Using rhetoric training as a basis, they develop concepts in groups together on how they can disseminate what they have learned in order to reach as many children as possible and motivate them to become active for their future.

See here that such an academy is not only useful, but also fun for the student – Main TV.

Sustainable on the Way

SAF-HOLLAND replaces two diesel vehicles by three eco-friendly, quiet and space-saving electric cars from the series „smart fortwo electric drive vehicles“. A clean alternative, which is also extremely useful for the local transport sector.

With the aim of a more environmentally friendly handling of the traffic between the plants, city driving or trips in the region, the “little one” has convinced in the selection of vehicles with electric motor across the board.

This car seems almost perfect for the short distance and urban area with a range of 160 km. A small turning circle and compact external dimensions of just 2.70 m in length and 1.70 m in width make finding a parking space extremely easy as well.

But the biggest advantage is of course in the electric motor. Because the three-phase synchronous motor ensures that the eSmart emits no CO2 during its use in the next few years and, moreover, runs very quietly from factory to factory.

According to Gerhard Rosenzweig, Fleet Manager of SAF-HOLLAND, the purchase of the three eSmarts fortwo is just the beginning. More electric cars are already planned for the coming year. They will then be from the series “smart forfour electric drive”.

STOP TALKING – START PLANTING

In keeping with the motto “Stop Talking, Start Planting”, the Plant for the Planet Foundation draws attention to climate change and fairness as well as to global environmental problems. In order to bring children and young people closer to these topics, SAF-HOLLAND organized another action day on 14.10.2017. On this day 25 pupils from the region learned more about the climatic and ecological contexts and even plant trees together.

The aim of “Plant-for-the-Planet” is to raise students’ awareness of climate and justice issues. The goals are set up with the help of the so-called academies, where children of already trained ambassadors – also children – learn the climatic and ecological correlations. Together, they are developing concepts of how to spread what they have learned in order to reach as many children as possible and to motivate them to take action for their future. The highlight of an academy is, of course, the active planting of trees.

SAF-HOLLAND supports the Plant for the Planet Foundation and organizes academies as they took place on 14.10.2017 in the Landhotel Klingerhof in Hösbach-Winzenhohl. 25 children aged between 8 and 13 learned how to contribute to a global climate justice and planted over 70 trees as a sign of the action.

Absolutely sustainable

As an international company, we are represented not only across Europe but throughout the world. That also means that our booths and their transport must be as flexible as possible. So it was particularly important to us to use lightweight materials in their construction. At the same time, with our individually configurable module concept, we can optimally fit exhibition spaces of sizes ranging from 10 to 600 square metres.

When it comes to sustainability, the conditions for environmentally friendly transport are crucial as well. The special lightweight aluminium construction of the new booth, for example, simplifies transport significantly. The very small pack size of the compact module concept, and the reusable transport cases, make transport as environmentally friendly as possible.

But not only that: for us, it’s important to do business in a way that is as resource-friendly as possible. It pays off for the environment, too, because the concept of working with largely reusable components means, for instance, that we can cut back substantially on the wood, plastic and cloth waste left behind after every trade fair.

Reusable and modern – our trade fair appearance shows how it is possible to exceed all of the requirements of a sustainable booth.

Every tree counts!

We all need to help out to decrease the ever-growing carbon dioxide emissions worldwide. Plant-for-the-Planet started the campaign „Stop talking. Start planting.“ and has already planted 4 billion trees since 2007 with the help of citizens, governments, and companies. Felix Finkbeiner started the campaign at the age of nine and motivated other children all over the world to take action. And what a success! Felix was able to persuade numerous prominent people as campaign sponsors including Head of State and Nobel Prize winner, Gesine Schwan, Prince Felipe of Spain, Wangari Maathai, Harrison Ford, Prince Albert II of Monaco, and Gisele Bündchen, to name a few. We may not be terribly famous, but we still think this campaign is wonderful, and we’re delighted to report that we were able to plant 80,000 trees already in the first year. Each tree absorbs an average of 10 kg of carbon dioxide per year. Because every tree binds an average of up to 10 kg of C02 per year – thus, SAF-HOLLAND saved 800,000 kg of C02 in the first year alone.

Felix’s goal is to plant one trillion trees – that’s how many trees are necessary to reduce the world’s carbon footprint by a fourth. Would you like to get involved? You can find all the necessary information on Plant-for-the-Planet here. Together with Felix, we celebrate every tree.

SAF-HOLLAND Academy (Plant-for-the-Planet)

Children learning from children: as part of the SAF-HOLLAND Climate Academy, young „Plant-for-the-Planet“ ambassadors showed the school pupils aged 7 to 16 what it means to be committed to environmental protection and justice. The trained ambassadors informed their contemporaries in Hösbach-Winzenhohl near Aschaffenburg of the key environmental issues and climate changes affecting our ecology.
During a rhetoric training session, the young environmental activists also learnt to effectively apply PR and motivation work to protect the climate.

By planting trees, they demonstrated their manual skills and learnt: a single tree absorbs up to 10 kg CO2 each year. As part of the group-wide „we think ahead“ campaign, SAF-HOLLAND donated 80,000 trees, thereby helping to save some 1,000,000 kg of CO2 over the coming two years.
